Reporting vs. Tattling – Does your child know the difference? When it comes to safety – does your child understand the difference between Tattling and Reporting? Do you? If not…you and your child should. It is very important that we teach our children from as young as 3 years old the difference between tattling and reporting.

I got an unexpected call mid week offering me a four pack of tickets for me to take my family to enjoy the show and I was both excited and apprehensive about the opportunity. While it had been years since I had seen an ice skating show live myself I would love to share this experience with my children. I was not sure my mohawk-wearing, Metallica-loving, Dungeons and Dragons playing, X-Box 360 boys would be willing to endure a night of Mickey and Minnie Mouse with their dear old mom and dad.

A couple of weeks ago, Carlos Peña of the Tampa Bay Rays lamented that the stands weren’t very full for one of the games. I kind of took that personally because I was one of the people NOT at the game. Oh how I wanted to call the clubhouse and tell him that I would be there every game if I could. But while our little baseball team that could focuses on its team mantra to do “What’s Important Now” and battles to make the MLB playoffs and top off the season with the best record in the American League, for many of us, What’s Important Now is economic survival.

Although I’d love to open my door to every child that needs care the sad truth is I am not super woman. Try as I may, I am not physically capable of tending to the needs of so many little ones all at once. Thankfully the state of Florida understands these physical limitations as well and has set forth their own standards and capacities in order to ensure providers don’t take on too much and put our children at risk as well.

It was inevitable. Well, two things, actually. It was only a matter of time before my son brought home his first real book report assignment. Congruently, I shouldn’t be surprised that when I asked him if he had homework, he answered ‘no’, because the teacher didn’t call it ‘homework’. To his credit, though he kept the assignment from us, he did covertly read the book he chose – Marley: A dog like no other, by John Grogan.

Apparently Octomom, Nadya Suleman and her 14 kids could be looking for a home because her mortgage is headed for foreclosure, according to a report posted Saturday by Radaronline.com. The article quoted interview with Amir Haddadin, who holds her mortgage, saying that she hadn’t made a payment between May and September. The same website reported on Friday that the mom who made national headlines with her delivery of eight babies is “going on welfare to make ends make”. My oldest son is now in middle school and has been delivered the unfortunate blow of riding the bus to school. The beginning of his first year it was tough but as time went on it became a bit more enjoyable due to the fact he had made some friends and it was a nice time to socialize and even unwind after the “grueling” day of studies. He is what I consider to be a good kid. He makes good choices in the types of people he will hang out with and he doesn’t use foul language and tends to treat his peers with respect. As we all know this is not always the case. Any parent that visits Pinellas County School Board’s Parent Portal can see there is a section dedicated to On Campus Arrests. How sad is this?

Why have I chosen my mission to keep Kids Safe? One little girl changed my life!!! This is my story: I am a licensed clinical social worker. Years ago I was a Guidance Counselor in a middle school and was fortunate to know an amazing 12 year old girl – she was a straight A student, class president, and often served as a role model for new students getting acclimated to the school. She came to my office one day and handed me a little magazine clipping – it read: My step-father has been sexually abusing me what do I do? I was stunned!

As we endeavored to build the premier Tampa Bay parent magazine website, several people asked about the tools we use to build and maintain iParentMagazine.com, as well as other resources that contribute to its success. iParent is built on the .NET Windows server platform using DotNetNuke (DNN) as our content management system (CMS

Oh, the joys of parenthood. I can recall it as if it were yesterday, the elation of seeing that little pink line appear on the stick that told me I was indeed pregnant with my first son after years of being told I could not conceive a child. Years of trying and failing had led my husband and I to believe our only option would be adopting a child. The only thought in our minds at that time were the joys of holding onto the little bundle of joy.

I returned a bit ago from the SPARC 2010 conference, which is one of the largest events for Tampa Bay parents, teachers, and providers that work with special needs children to get together. The acronym-heavy event is put on by STAND, the Florida Statewide Advocacy Network on Disabilities, Inc., and its official title is STAND Pinellas (County) Accessing Resources Conference. We will have much more coverage of the event in the iParent News section, but I feel compelled to share perhaps the greatest tip for working with a special needs child that I have ever heard that was shared by one of the presenters.
